Client Overview

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc.—rooted in a rich legacy of warmth, generosity, and tradition—is on a mission to bring the goodness of country hospitality to life. Since the first store opened in Lebanon, Tenn. in 1969, Cracker Barrel has been serving up abundant portions of craveable homestyle food and offering one-of-a-kind retail finds. With approximately 660 company-owned Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations in 43 states, the brand continues to honour its heritage while welcoming everyone with more than a meal.

The Challenge

Cracker Barrel’s on‑premises SharePoint 2016 environment was nearing its end‑of‑life phase. It hosted the company’s employee intranet, and with external support scheduled to end soon, the IT team saw an opportunity to evaluate more sustainable options.

The Solution

Cadence Solutions undertook the project to migrate Cracker Barrel’s data from SharePoint 2016 to SharePoint Online. The data migration project went beyond flipping the switch on infrastructure by also including a modernization of the intranet site, aptly named The Barrel, presenting a significant opportunity to rethink the site’s overall look and feel while addressing both functional and aesthetic pain points.
The scope of the project included:

1-for-1 Data Migration of historical information to the new site
Implementing a visual refresh and functional modernization of the site
Release of an internal Copilot agent for content hosted on the site

The People Component

The new Intranet site gives employees a fresh site that is easier to use, which helps to streamline accessing key information. The introduction of a Copilot Agent, dubbed as The Barrel agent, scoped to internal documents only, now provides only relevant internal information, giving access to quick answers to employee questions, while keeping all information secure, relevant, and tailored to the company’s workflows. In this way, focused automation is driving productivity for employees at Cracker Barrel.

The Impact

With the new solution in place, Cracker Barrel has embraced a more efficient and secure way of working, highlighting the power of adapting to new technology to drive success. The modernization to SharePoint online wasn’t just a technical upgrade; it was a strategic necessity. A total of six outdated servers were eliminated in the process, resulting in a leaner IT department budget, while also making better use of the company’s existing software licenses. In tandem, the client’s newly modernized Intranet site and Copilot agent now provide staff with improved access to information, contributing to increased productivity and better adherence to company policies and procedures.
